HAECHI ORIGINALS NFT COLLECTION
Cultural Significance: The Haechi (also known as 해태 - ‘Haetae’) is a mythical creature in Korean tradition which was believed to protect people from fires and natural disasters, and also have the ability to distinguish between good and evil. The Haechi is currently the symbol of Seoul, South Korea. This painting in particular was inspired by the formidable Haechi sculptures found at the Gwanghwamun Gate of the Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea. I was inspired to make the painting after I visited the palace while staying in Seoul for some months. The Haechi artworks are based on the five elements which are significant in Korean culture - Wood, Earth, Water, Fire, and Metal. These five elements (also known as five phases) have their roots in ancient Chinese tradition.
The Water Haechi is a unique Haechi created by the artist, in connection with the Five Elements (or Five Phases) which are significant in Korean tradition and have their origins in ancient Chinese philosophy. The element of water is also associated with winter and cold, and the Water Haechi embodies the vibrance of the ocean and bite of frost.
